Freemium in films, Sita Sings The Blues

“Sita Sings The Blues” is one movie that is making more money the more it is shared online. This is a great example of Freemium in the film industry. In this video Nina Paley shares her experiences of making “Sita Sings The Blues” available for free.

I saw this interesting video through Techdirt and Social Square. Earlier I have written about some other interesting experiments with Freemium in the TV industry e.g. “Dr. Horrible’s Sing along Blog” and “Tiki bar

Nina Paley has offered the movie online for free viewing, sharing, and downloading. Revenue is generated by selling complimentary products like Physical DVDs, screening in Cinemas and T-shirts. In the video Nina reveals some interesting data and concludes that the more she shared the more money she made.

Her experience clearly indicates that the more she gave free the more money she was able to make. This is very much in line with the economic reasoning behind Freemium as originally proposed by Joel Spolsky.

“The bigger the supply of a product there is, the bigger the demand for its complimentary products will be”

This data sounds very encouraging, positive, and interesting. However, it is too soon to make any conclusions about the results of Nina’s experiment. Much of the professed revenue is still to come and I look forward to getting more data from this experiment in the coming months. I will surely share it with you on this blog.
