Business Model Innovation

As mentioned earlier, I am very much interested in methodologies that let you explore different possibilities within conventional business models. On this blog, I have talked about the tools that I am developing, which I hope will serve this purpose. In addition, there are quite a few of topical expressions of thoughts and ideas that you will find interesting. One of these is the business model canvas by Alex Osterwalder.

A business model is basically a representation of how an organization makes – or intends to make – money. The business model canvas is an easy way of describing a business model.
This slideshow explains it with great use of illustration.

The description of the business model can then be the basis for innovation.

One simple way is to brainstorm on the various ways in which each functional area could be carried out. And then, you could look at how this would impact the rest of the business model in its totality.

In the following slideshow, Alex talks about the importance of business model innovation in general. From slide 90 onwards, he explains the business model canvas and a way to use it for innovation.

(Personally I am working on a tool that lets you work with this canvas with a focus on freemium, remember to check back in a week or two.)

In general, I can only recommend the business model innovation blog. Alex has some great posts and explains why business model innovation is important. As he quotes on his blog:

“Companies that focus on business model innovation outperform companies focusing on operations in terms of marginal growth”
