Tubefilter announces the succesful launch of “Tiki bar”, a freemium model of Web TV.
“The new “Membership” plan, allows fans a slew of privileges including downloads of full HD (720p) episodes in Dolby 5.1 Surround sound, a 15% discount on all official Tiki merchandise and access to members-only events like a recent Happy Hour at Tiki Bar HQ. Priced at $49 annually, enrollment appears to be exceeding expectations.”
It was just a few weeks ago that I wrote how successful writer and director Joss Whedon used Online TV online for the show “Dr. Horribles sing along blog”. It was worth noting how he successfully created a business model for online TV content.
It is important to mention here that while Whedon already had a large following thanks to hit shows like “Buffy the vampire slayer” the team behind Tiki Bar TV had no such head start and had to begin from scratch.
While there will always be a debate, albeit with some merit, that free and freemium works best only for established artists. It will be interesting to see how the newcomer Tiki Bar fares in comparison to Whedon.
We will have to give the freemium business model a fair chance of a few months to ascertain if the model has been a success. Stay tuned to this blog to find the results I promise it will make interesting reading.
What is your assessment; will the freemium model be a good match for Tiki Bar TV?
