The Full Monty

Moving in the right direction, but not quite there..

Recently Monty Python created a stir in the media, instead of suing youtube for having their material on-line.
This moved was rightly praised on various blogs:
Techdirt, http://techdirt.com/articles/20081119/0307122880.shtml
Underwire http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/11/monty-python-fi.html
Mediafuturist http://www.mediafuturist.com/2008/11/funny-video-mon.html

The praise was largely founded in the fact that they embraced the economics of free – by giving away a non-scares goods in order to sell more scares goods (DVD).

Yet they have only released 24 small video clips with a link to the Amazon page for their videos. If they wanted to truly embrace the economy of non- scarcity, this is only the beginning.

They could sell limited edition collectors deluxe DVDs. Like the album Nine Inch nails released?

They could offer customised birthday/Christmas greetings for the ultimate fans.

They could sell the coconuts from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

They could sell more t-shirts http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20081124/1709222941.shtml

By having the right complimentary products, their revenue would go up for each person viewing their stuff online. Thus giving away the whole back catalog would be the only sensible solution. By strategically using a freemium model, the Python crew could make their fans even happier and make even more money.
