Prototyping freemium - new tool

When manufactures create a new product, they start with prototypes. Some companies, like American IDEO, have become famous for an innovation process that involves many brainstorms and prototypes.

Yet planning and strategy processes seem to be a lot more linear. You think about a few alternatives, analyze the pros and cons and then choose one.

By using more prototypes and crazy brainstorms I believe that the planning process can have a more creative and innovative result.

For many companies freemium would be a radical innovation, and that is not easy to decide for.

Changing your business model to freemium might not be right for your company. Yet it is hard to know without exploring what it would look like for your company.

By creating a prototype, you can have a risk-less first view at what such a model might look like.

As I have mentioned earlier, the purpose of this blog is to help companies figure out if freemium is something that would work for them. One of the ways I aim to help companies with this is a range of online tools. I have just finished and published the first tool:

Tool 1 – Prototyping a freemium model using the business model canvas

This tool contains 4 different worksheets and accompanying instructional videos. It is based on the “business model canvas” methodology developed by Alex Osterwalder.
