Helping companies figure out if freemium is relevant for them

Personally, I find the theoretical perspective on freemium and ‘free’ interesting. However, I must say, it is much more interesting trying to figure out how you can practically help companies explore their possibilities on this concept.

This was the background for the project leading up to this blog “ business of openness”. The main question here was how can I help companies figure out if it would be relevant for them to conceptualize and implement a business model around free products/services?

The result was the prototype for a toolkit which includes

1 An introductory video explaining how the concept of free products/services works

2  A short video with best practice examples of enterprises using a model based on the concept of ‘free’

3 A series of exercises that helps explore the area by projections, calculations and thought experiments.

The prototype is available online at www.businessofopenness.org. With this prototype as the starting point, I will continue to develop a series of tools that will be posted on this blog.

I have gotten some great feedback on this, but can never get enough. So drop by the site and share your thoughts/suggestions. I shall try and implement them as and when they add value to the first principles of ‘free’ and ‘open business’.
